John 21:15-17 · Psalm 23:1-2 · Ezekiel 34:2-3 · John 10:9
"Feed my sheep." - John 21:17
The Research
What the Scriptures reveal
In John 21, Jesus asked Peter three times to feed and tend His sheep. Throughout the shepherd metaphor of Scripture, the consistent theme is that the shepherd leads the flock to nourishment rather than feeding off them.
In Psalm 23, the shepherd causes David to lie down in green pastures. In Ezekiel 34, God condemned the shepherds of Israel because they fed from the flock rather than feeding it. Jesus promised in John 10:9 that His sheep would find pasture.
Spiritual feeding for the pastor happens primarily through preaching - not merely transferring information, but guiding the congregation toward obedience. The shepherd's responsibility is to feed; the sheep's responsibility is to eat when led to truth.
Practical Application
What this looks like in practice
- Preach to the gap between what your congregation knows and how they are actually living
- Plan your teaching calendar around what your people need to obey, not just what they need to know
- Measure the effectiveness of your preaching by behavioral change, not just attendance or response
- Ask regularly: am I feeding my flock, or drawing from them?
